Be positive!
You’ve probably heard that too many times to count. Two simple words to say, but it isn’t as simple to actually be positive. It can be difficult to maintain positivity, especially when life is throwing lemons at you.
Sure, you could make lemonade from them, but first, you’d have to catch them and the last half a dozen were squished when you tripped, slipped, and fell over them as they littered your path. So yes, it can be difficult to maintain positivity, but it isn’t impossible. Yet, optimists are generally healthier and happier people, so the effort is worth it!
It is tempting to think that people are simply happy people, or they are not. However, happiness is largely a choice. It’s up to you to train your brain to be positive and happy.
Brain Retraining
Forget brain training; this is brain retraining. We far too often allow our past experiences to drag us down and prevent us from reaching our full potential. There are exercises that help you access those negative memories in order to reframe and overcome them. Meditation, hypnotherapy, and tapping are all excellent approaches.
Ultimately, the idea is that by accessing these memories, you can change the script and build a more positive belief about them. The key takeaway is that you create and maintain positivity by first healing old wounds.
Positivity Begets Positivity
Acts of kindness benefit everyone. It isn’t just the target of the kind act who benefits. When you act kindly, you feel great, too. It costs nothing to be kind. The world needs more compassionate people. When we are treated kindly, we feel hopeful for the world, which is something we are collectively in desperate need of.
Offering kindness and compassion to others all the time is a good habit to have, but it’s particularly helpful if you start to feel anxious, negative, down, or hopeless.
Focus on Happiness
What better way to build positivity than by focusing on all of the amazing things in your life? What makes you happy to be alive? Focus on that! It can be difficult to find the silver lining in difficult situations, but the more you focus on your happiness, the easier it will become.
Every morning, think about three things you’re looking forward to about the upcoming day. Before you go to bed each night, make a note of five positive things that happened to you today.
Indulge Yourself
What’s your favorite movie? What television show do you love? What type of sports do you enjoy watching? Do you have a favorite team? Is there a restaurant you adore? What hobbies do you have?
The point of these questions is to learn more about what you’re passionate about. We should always look to indulge our passions, lest we become negative and despondent. You should actively maintain boundaries to ensure you have time and space to pursue things you’re passionate about. Try to carve out at least 30 minutes a day for your greatest passion.
Take Care
Your diet has a lot of influence over your emotional state. You may question this, but the reality of the matter is what you eat influences your sleep patterns and your attitude to exercise. If you want to be a positive thinker, then you have to take a long, hard look at how you take care of yourself. There are likely areas for improvement.
In Summary
We briefly touched on finding the silver lining, but let’s zoom in on it now. Once you begin the process of retraining your brain, you will find it much easier to see the silver lining in every situation. As you get started, it will be something you do deliberately. You will have to challenge yourself consciously.
For example, if you apply for a promotion and it doesn’t work out, don’t beat yourself up over it. You just never know what’s around the corner. The universe may have something more spectacular in store for you. It isn’t a failure; it’s a learning opportunity.
